As more people live in cities, spaces to live are getting smaller. So how can we improve living, especially in non-permanent housing with smart lighting?
In this project, brought together by the SCE and lighting manufacturer INFINEON, our team of industrial and graphic designers as well as business students created a modalized light fixture that can be installed in a few minutes and controlled via app.
PROBELM & RESEARCH
But as spaces get smaller and living situations less permanent, creating a supportive lighting system is not always possible. No drilling policies and missing ceiling ports, all of our team members knew these struggles, because we were all renting in rooms smaller than 10 sqm.
CONCEPT & GOALS
As a solution we created a modalized system of tubes, that can bridge between surfaces up to 4 m wide. The light could be installed between two walls or from floor to ceiling. Using the mechanism of a shower curtain rod, the light can be installed in a matter of minutes without drilling or additional wireing.
Each light module can be turned 360° to create direct or indirect lighting to fit the current needs of the habitant. Using an app to control intensity and color of the lamp different light modes can be created to help relax or work.
HARDWARE PROTOTYPE
To create the light modules we used standardized aluminum profiles with an polycarbonate covers to diffuse the light. As light source we integrated a dual-tone LED strip that allows to switch seamlessly between light temperatures. The assembly of the lamp can be done without any tools just by sticking the modules together. The magnets help transfer energy and the indents connect the lamp without additional work.
